How Do They Choose?

I am always interested in how the whole word of mouth thing works. Like, for instance, you watch 3 different shows in the same week on different networks and you hear the same song that you've never heard before that week. How did that happen? Did the music publicist just blanket the industry with the song and three different shows chose it because it's just that good? No, it can't be that. Maybe because one woman read and she told 2 friends and they told 2 friends and so on and so on. Again, probably not how it goes.

Anyway, I just read a book, Shadow of the Wind, that I'm surprised hasn't been on all the book group lists. It's got everything that Mother of Pearl had and so much more than Anywhere But Here and it's a much more fun read than Madame Bovary or one of the other popular classics. Did Shadow just have a crappy publicist? It's not because the writing or the plot it of poor quality, I guarantee you that.

If it's really just an enormous world-wide game of telephone then I'll play my part. I'm whispering in your ear, Go read this book.
