10 Things We Learned About the Mermaid Parade

Thought it'd be good to have these somewhere I could look them up easily when we start getting ready for next year.

1. Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen, especially on the shoulders

2. Incorporate a parasol for more sun protection

3. Have your whole party arrive by 11am to check in and get their hands stamped

4. If you want to swim, swim between 11 and 1:30 when you should be getting back to the staging area

5. Bring water to drink, cold water and lots of it

6. Bring a cooler

7. If you have to carry things (civilian clothes, water, bribes for the judges [which are encouraged]) incorporate the carrying device into your ensemble - decorate a cooler and make sure it has wheels, that sort of thing

8. Bring spritzing devices to cool yourself off - water gun, spray bottle

9. MORE! More glitter, more garland, more sparkles, more fabric, more people in your group, more of everything you think you want

10. It's way better to be in the parade than to be in the swarming crowd outside, we had a fabulous time and I can't wait to do it again!

  1. I saw a little girl wearing a Mermaid Parade tee get off a plane in Denver and thought of you. So glad you had fun!

Some April you have to come down to Atlanta and join us for the Inman Park Festival Parade. It's toally a neighborhood created event and I've been in it 4 of the past 7 years and never had a bad time. It takes 45 minutes for the whole parade to pass one viewer.

Now next Mermaid parade, if Aileen is in the States, we are SO there! We tried to get up a few years ago to promote Geek Love but couldn't get the time free. Been wanting to go ever since. I am so jealous that you got to be part of it!

  4. I read about the parade on Gawker-yes, I occasionally read a trashy site. I looked for your picture but I didn't see it. It looked so fun.

  7. I think parasols are sorely underrated and underutilized.

Time for a parasol revolution! Let's bring them into the mainstream!
