A Couple More International Things

I knew I was forgetting a couple of things that were important. Finally I remembered them and I think they deserve their own post.

1. In the UK and Canada (and possibly other places, I don't know) Veteran's Day is called Remembrance Day and the symbol is the poppy. The symbol comes from a poem about a WWII battle and you can learn more about that here.

2. Right now we have a lot of pre-veterans who also need our support. A cause that I have given time and goods to before is Any Soldier. When you first go to the site it may seem a little overwhelming, there's a lot of bureaucracy in our armed services. Take just a few minutes to poke around and you'll find this, though, " Letters are THE MOST requested thing by these Soldiers." Seriously, letters. So for the investment of maybe 10 minutes to work out who to use as a contact, 5 minutes to find where you put the damned stationery, 10 minutes to write a letter and some postage you've provided the most requested item, some contact from home. That's not even a full half hour of your time plus it's serving your country so you can feel fine about doing it while you're at work. A few years ago, when I worked in another office, I organized a group of co-workers and we packed up a couple of boxes of items for female soldiers and sent those off with some letters, too. I'm not in a position to do that right now but a few letters? Hell, I'd really like to do that. So I'm going to.

Join me? If you want to send a letter and get to the site and the logistics are just to much for you feel free to shoot me an e-mail (isabeau6 at hotmail dot com) and I'll pick out a contact for you and send you back the address to use.

  1. I'll do it! Not sure what I'll say, but I'll do it!

It seems like letters would be easier to send these days because of email.

  2. That's a fantastic suggestion. I know I dont think of them nearly as often as I should.
