Weirdly Sensible

UntitledThis afternoon I spent a couple of hours in the park with friends working on skills our dogs may not yet have perfected in preparation for attempting to make them Canine Good Citizens. I keep referring to this as a weird thing to do. Then Sara pointed out that it's kind of ridiculous to think of training one's dog as weird. Did we think that well trained dogs just manifested out of the ether? Sure, occasionally you get a dog who doesn't do much outside your parameters of acceptance but the truth of it is that it's almost always more the humans ignoring or avoiding the bad behavior than it is a dog coming out of the box perfectly mannered.

It's possible that getting together a group of friends to work on dog training is a little nerdy but I'm done thinking of it as weird. It's smart and it's making my life better in a lot of ways.

Is there anything you do that some people consider weird that is actually just common sense?

Kizzie, I'm guessing my opinion doesn't count as a neutral one lol. Btw, I'm almost done w the paperwork to become a certified CGC evaluator so fire up the dogs!!

  2. I try to stay away from the 'w' word. It makes me think too much about why other people behave as they do, in a way that brings up that other 'w' word, 'wrong.' In a surprisingly large list of categories. (Didn't know that about me, did you? I hope?)

P.S. Congratulations, Rikke, on your almost-certification. Can't wait to use the CGC process to re-establish a training routine for Bu. (Nice side effect - our most annoying cat is learning to sit/touch instead of charging the food-prep area. Slowly.)
