Since Dooce linked this story (I recommend acquiring a tissue before you click) I'm sure that everyone and their dog knows about this but just in case you didn't I have to link to it. I've never purchased a pet. They all sort of...find me. I've adopted 2 cats, in separate instances years apart, who turned out to be pregnant and I ended up with all their kittens (and all their vet bills and fixings and spayings [spay and neuter your pets, spay and neuter your pets, spay and neuter your pets]) as well. So this story feels like a, I don't know, vindication maybe, of my way of pet adoption. If you leave yourself open to it pets will find you. I don't recommend going to war, saving a dog and having to leave it behind so it is forced to follow you hundreds of miles through the desert but if that's how you roll...
