You'll pardon my echoing the entire world (nearly) when I say that I'm thinking of Japan and everyone with people in Japan right now. Terribly scary stuff and the sort of thing that, even when you're well prepared, you can't just hike up your socks and get over. Still and all, I don't know that I have anything new to add to the conversation. I can direct you to Chookooloonks. At the bottom of this post there's a round up of ways we can help.
In the mean time it's possible that laughter is the best medicine so I have a little story for you.
I called my mother this morning on the occasion of her birthday. We talked for a while, established some things, like the fact that I totally forgot Aunt Rena's birthday on Monday (CRAP), then just shot the shit. I tried to describe the things I'm teaching the little dog and she was interested to hear if he might be performing any time soon.
"Maybe you can teach him how to do a back flip in the air." she speculated.
"I don't even know how I would communicate that to him."
"Hmmmm. I'm not sure...I guess you'd have to show him by doing it yourself."
My mother overestimates my abilities on so many levels.

China photo update: I've made a collection of sets of photos here. I'll be adding to it as we go. I'm still on the first SD card but I'm plugging along. You can also see Queen Bee's photos here.
