Well, Did You Ever

Tonight I went to see a gig straight from the devious minds of Mark & Sharon come alive on a stage on Bleecker Street. They got a bunch of folk musicians together to sing the nostalgia trip that is, for us, the 1980s. I sat there for a while and it was fun. Then I felt like I didn't remember anything. After that I remembered things but it seemed that the 80s I loved were not the 80s that everyone else loved. I tried to think of which 80s tunes I loved. What would I sing if I was one of the special guests? My mind, predictably, went blank.

At this point the anvil came out.

A woman whose name I didn't hear turned on the keyboard and busted out some Air Supply. Yup, that's right, she played the stuffing out of some Open Arms. I am not ashamed to say that I got a little weepy.

That's exactly the kind of simple, classic power ballad I'd have sung. Well, if I'd remembered it.

What about you? What's your heart song from the 80s?

(Yeah, that's a current photo of Air Supply. Yeah, it's killing me a little, too.)

Yeah, I dropped the guitar and started staining at those high notes for that song. Specifically because I sang it at a best friend's bachelor party. :)

  3. the soundtrack to Phantom of the Opera. we sang that on car trips.

...then again, i was a kid in the 80s. so my music library was limited to my parents' stuff (lots of Beatles, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, etc.), showtunes, and Peter, Paul & Mary.

  4. Well, Madonna was one of my idols... early Madonna that is, so "Dress You Up" and "Into the Groove" definitely. Mr. Mister. A-ha's "Take on Me." My favourite Bryan Adam's "Summer of 69." Erasure. Depeche Mode. Cyndi Lauper. Kate Bush with Peter Gabriel "Don't Give Up"? I think... Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited"... Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night". The Smiths' "Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me"... OMD's "If You Leave", "Don't You... Forget About Me" (hello John Hughes films). Soundtrack to Les Miz more than Phantom especially Cosette's solo about the clouds...

So glad you made it to that - sorry I missed it. Wanted to go, but ran out of energy and had to go to work the next day. No Presidents' Day off for me!

    I know, I'm lame.
